Sand dollars (also known by smart Alecs as “Echinarachnius exentricus”) are spiny, hard-skinned animals that are shaped like a coin (a flattened disk). What you will find on the beaches around the Gulf of Mexico is the skeleton or dead “shell” of the live creature.

They are fascinating things! There are many species available – most are white but the one in this picture is a much rarer blue one.

Pensacola Beach is fast becoming known as one of the most shell and sand dollar-rich beaches in the whole of Florida. So if you want a cheap but highly exciting day of beach combing with the kids, why not pop along there and get a few of the cheapest and best souvenirs of your Florida Flydrive ever!
