Traveling to Disney World – Watch Michael Jackson at Disneyland

Drama movie “Captain EO and Michael Jackson” will be played at Disneyland starting on Tuesday Feb,23.

Chief executive Disneyland official site, Heather Hust Rivera said, Disneyland will feature a movie with 70mm image size with the duration of 17 minutes in Tomorrowland with a voice that has been perfected.

But Rivera also shows there are some scenes that will not be changed with the additional of special effects to the scenes that have been damaged.

Jackson, who died last year, in the film plays the role of a spaceship captain who fight the evil witch queen played by Anjelica Huston.

Swimming Without The Dangerous Wildlife

If you are going to Florida and want to go swimming, you have four main options.

1. Go swimming in a pond, river or lake and play Tarzan with an alligator (I don’t recommend this option by the way!).

2. Go swimming in the sea and take your chances with the occasional jellyfish and occasional shark – especially in Gulf Coast waters. (This isn’t all that smart either!)

3. Go swimming in the pool at your hotel. This is usually wildlife-free, although an occasional swarm of college kids or drunken tourists might qualify!

4. Swim in a natural spring. You might run across a few turtles but they’re just an added attraction.

If you choose the fourth option above, there are plenty of options to choose from.

My favourite two are:

1. Ginnie Springs Wilderness Park

Ginnie Springs is located in the North-Eastern part of Florida up the I-75 from Orlando.

It offers great camping facilities and RV parking BUT it’s main attraction for aquanauts is its cave-diving opportunities.

The seven springs in the park pump in thousands of gallons of water a day at a constant 72 degrees – which might seem a bit chilly but in the Florida summer you’ll be very pleased to cool off.

There are other water-related activities to do here including rubber-tubing, snorkelling, canoeing and kayaking.

All in all, it’s a relatively unspoiled spot (apart from the electricity hook-ups for RVs and a small shop) where you can enjoy the water without the wildlife.

2. On the Gulf Coast there is also Wiki-Wachee Springs. This is all about mermaids and water parks. It’s more of a one-or-more-day-excursion spot for families and mermaid lovers everywhere.

I’ll be doing a full feature on Wiki-Wachee but for now, you can get more details at:

http://mermaid.weekiwachee.com/

So, for the outdoorsy types, why not think about a day or two at Ginnie Springs? And if you prefer the more tourist-style attractions, pop over to Wiki Wachee for a day trip you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Have loads of fun in and out of the water and remember to SWIM SAFE!

Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach, Florida: Take it fast, take it slow – but take it in!

Daytona Beach is the capital of the fastest and the slowest holiday styles in Florida. Speedway, stock cars and racing thrills or 23 miles of relaxing white sand beaches – the choice is yours

Daytona Beach is the capital of the fastest and the slowest holiday styles in Florida. Speedway, stock cars and racing thrills or 23 miles of relaxing white sand beaches – the choice is yours.

You can take Daytona Beach as fast as you can or as slow as you like. Whichever style you prefer, you shouldn’t miss it.

During Spring Break and Bike Week, the town is jumping, crowded and more alive than an ant hill! The rest of the year, it is whatever you want it to be.

First things first though. To get there, pick up Highway 4 from the North-Eastern end of Orlando. Head North and you’ll land in Daytona Beach in about an hour or so.

Anything with an Engine Comes to Daytona Beach

If you decide to go to Daytona Beach, you could be in for a whole lot of fun. Lovers of the thrills and spills of motor racing will feel as if they have come home at last. If it’s got an engine, it has probably been raced in – or ON – the sands at some time since 1903 when the first official race took place there.

To watch the action, go to The Daytona International Speedway site and check up on race dates and ticketing information for stock cars, race cars, speedway and go-karts.

To play the speed-freak in person, go to the Richard Petty Driving Experience – it’s hair-raising but it’s fun!

For interactive racers, we recommend the simulators, exhibits and IMAX at Daytona USA . It’s the most exciting interactive almost-museum we’ve ever been in.

To keep speed-loving kids happy, try Go-Kart City where the go-karts are made in the form of replica stock cars.

And for the motor-history buffs there is the FREE Living Legends of Auto Racing Museum.

23 Miles of the Best Beaches in Florida.

When you’ve had your fill of the speed and excitement of the track, you can toddle off to the Beach.

There are 23 miles of white sandy beach so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a spot – and there are practically no Germans so you’ll have no trouble finding a sunbed either!

The winds that blow in from the sea keep the beach warm in winter and cool in summer so it’s a good place to be at practically any time of the year.

Relax with a good book or, if you’ve really been bitten by the speed bug, keep the old adrenalin rushing with some of the water sports available on the beach.

There’s everything from surfing schools to kayak (canoe) rental to banana rides to sport fishing and parasailing.

Something Completely and Chocolately Different.
For something completely unique, we highly recommend a visit to Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory. They’ll give you a free tour of their traditional handmade chocolate factory and throw in some scrummy free samples. It’s a must for chocolate monsters everywhere!

The New Improved Daytona Beach

The town has had some bad press in the past. People have complained of run-down areas along the approaches to Daytona Beach and some rather unpleasant smells too! We have driven into the area about a dozen times and we have never noticed any of these things – maybe we just go around with our eyes closed!

The good news is that the city has invested millions in redevelopment over the past few years and the investment is now starting to pay off in terms of visitor numbers and satisfaction.

The new face of tourist activity can be found at the prestigious new Oceanwalk development. If you like your holidays to be squeaky clean and cutting edge you should probably stay, play, eat and drink down at Oceanwalk. Go for one of the big new resort hotels and play till you drop.

When you choose your accommodation in Daytona Beach, remember that you can only see a sun RISE over the Atlantic from the East Coast of the Americas – so hang the expense and get a room with a sea view. I promise you it is worth getting up for! And remember you can always catch up on your sleep later on the beach if you need to.

Cheap Flydrive Holidays To Florida

Cheap Flydrive Holidays To Florida: Second rate option – or First Rate Adventure?

Cheap Flydrive Holidays to Florida – our experiences with cost-cutting luxury in America’s Sunshine South

We discovered the secret of cheap flydrive holidays to Florida and we want to pass on some of our experience to you. We found that although they may be cheap (and we’ll be showing you some unbelievable cheap-cuts), if you do it right, they are far from nasty.

With the current pound-dollar exchange rate, plus a few useful tips and contacts (which we’ll be passing on to you), we have had some of the the most amazing cheap flydrive holidays to Florida and the South for a fraction of anything you might imagine.

Did you know that you can you do a flydrive to Florida for the same price as a holiday in Spain? It’s true!

There are just so many ways to keep it cheap in Florida!

– Cheap flights (especially to Orlando);

– Some of the cheapest car hire rates in the world;

– Very competitive villa and motel rates;

– Thousands of cheap restaurants and fast food outlets;

– Petrol prices you haven’t seen in England for 20 years!

When we go, we love to drive for miles and get off the tourist trail. Of course you don’t need to travel far. There is a year’s worth of things to do right in Orlando. But with petrol (or gas as they call it over there) at a fraction of inflated British prices, cheap flydrive holidays to Florida allow you to travel far and wide if that’s what you like to do.

And accommodation is plentiful and very reasonable wherever you go.
On our first flydrive holiday, we actually travelled 4,000 miles in a convertible. We had booked the ‘cheap and cheerful’ compact saloon and got a FREE upgrade.

Tip no. 1: always ask if there is an upgrade available – the worst they can do is say “no”; but you’ll be surprised how often they say yes. We have a 100% success rate so far.

Our Furthest Drive on a Flydrive

We started in Orlando and drove to Daytona Beach where we got up early to watch the sun rise over the Atlantic. We had breakfast on the balcony of our hotel room as we watched the wings of the morning – SPECTACULAR!

We actually had to remind ourselves that we were on a CHEAP flydrive holiday to Florida because we felt like a million dollars.

That seaview balcony room was one of our minor extravagances – it cost $60 (around £30) for the two of us. That was the room price, and if there had been four of us it would have cost the same. We rarely paid anything like this for accommodation.

From Daytona we travelled to Georgia, South Carolina, Georgia (again), Alabama and Misissippi. When we hit the Misissippi River – the western boundary of the State – we turned north up to Memphis, Tennessee. Then, after seeing Elvis in concert (or someone very like him!), we drove across the Mississippi into Arkansas.

We stayed at Little Rock and Hot Springs and finally crossed at Texarkana into Texas and travelled the 200 miles down to Beaumont. Then into the Louisiana swamps and on to New Orleans – just a few weeks before Hurricane Katrina devastated the area.

The three days we spent in New Orleans were some of our best.

I had expected these days to stretch the budget to breaking point but we proved that, even in a historical city like New Orleans, cheap flydrive holidays to Florida and beyond are alive and well.

We paid a total hotel bill of $128.00 or about £65.00 for 2 people for three nights in a stunning French-colonial style hotel with a four poster bed!

Then we drove through Mississippi and Alabama again (this time their Gulf coasts), along the Florida panhandle and back to Orlando for the grand finale of our holiday at Disney World.

The entire holiday lasted three weeks and although we did some hard driving on a few days days, it didn’t feel at all rushed. We spent two or more days in several places and really got the feel of them.

That is the magic of these really cheap flydrive holidays to Florida! Starting from Orlando, you can explore Florida, the neighbouring States and even end up wandering, as we did, right across Dixieland.

Or you can stay put in Orlando enjoying the many attractions; or just confine yourself to central Florida.

Flydrive gives you the choice. That is why we fell in love with it.

The availability of cheap flydrive holidays to Florida opens up the modern adventure of the Great American Highway.

Flagler College St Augustine

Flagler College St Augustine: Jewelled Historical Spectacle and Working College

Flagler College St Augustine: Study The Glittering Past or Study Business at this Great Institution

What is now Flagler College St Augustine was originally built as an opulent resort for extremely wealthy guests. You had to be on the New York Social Register just to be allowed to have a room there.

Now that’s EXCLUSIVE!

Every suite was different and each was utterly unique. If you held a suite for the 90 days of the year the hotel was open, you paid for the entire 90 days – whether you stayed for 90 days or one! OUCH!

All the interior decoration was designed by Charles Lewis Tiffany. The Tiffany glass that still graces the refectory alone is now valued at $30,000,000. Dining in true style is still on the menu at Flagler College St Augustine!

In the true spirit of innovation, Henry Flagler fitted the whole building with the new-fangled electric lights that were really brand new when the hotel was built.

Unfortunately, the guests were too scared to touch the magical new light switches!!

Flagler solved that problem by employing one person to stand by each and every switch in the building just to turn it on or off. That’s the job for me!

You can take a guided tour of this gem of St Augustine for the miserly sum of just $7.00 nowadays, which is a just bit cheaper than the price of renting a suite in the early days!

Flagler College Today
Well the days of the New York Upper Crust coming to sun themselves at Flagler College, St Augustine may be over (sad sigh….) but the building has not been allowed to stand idle! Flagler College St Augustine

Henry Flagler was a man of great innovation and an extremely shrewd businessman. It is very fitting then that his old resort should have been turned into a College of Business and the Liberal Arts.

Ranked as one of the top ten most beautiful college campuses in America, the Flagler College offers a program of business and other courses to a very select group of about 2,000 undergraduate students (60% girls and only 40% boys – lucky boys!).

Give the lads a chance – they’ve only been allowed to be students since 1971! Before that date Flagler was a girls only college.

Want a sneak preview of the sort of place Flagler College St Augustine is? Well here are a few virtual mini-tours to give you a better idea.

With its fees held down to around $12,000 a year plus another $6,300 for room and board, Flagler must be a very popular college. That sounds like a bargain to me!

If you are actually looking for a great college and would like to add Flagler College St Augustine to your list of possible schools, you probably ought to go over and have a look at their catalogue and check things out.

When we were at Flagler College we were taken back to our college days and started dreaming about how we could have been multi-millionaire industrialists like Henry Flagler if we had just come to St Augustine to study business.

Religious Attractions in St Augustine Florida

Religious Attractions in St Augustine Florida

Religious Attractions To Wow The Whole Family. St Augustine’s Incredible Religious History is Set In Stone.

When it comes to religious attractions, St Augustine, Florida is unmatched for sheer historical significance anywhere in America.

Of course, all things are relative! My local parish church in England was built in the 14th century and York Minster was an established administrative centre before William the Conqueror ever heard of England!

But in terms of the “New World”, St Augustine really marks the beginning of things.

The Menendez Cross
When Pedro Menendez arrived at the shores of St Augustine Florida, one of the first things he did was to hold a service of thanksgiving and dedication. It was the first ever Roman Catholic Mass held on Floridian soil and the site is now marked by a 208ft high cross.

The cross is a very imposing and powerful structure during the day. At night, though, it is absolutely majestic. If you want somewhere for a great evening visit, this could be the place to do it.

There is not much activity going on, but a quiet stroll through the grounds in the evening to the accompaniment of the chirruping cicadas with this huge cross in the background is one of the most spiritual experiences you will ever have – whether you are Catholic or not.

The great cross (above) is surrounded by a huge complex of gardens, shrines, chapels and archaeological excavations. It is all very interesting and extremely tranquil.

If you want to get the best out of your visit to this beautiful religious attraction, the best way to do it is to have a look at the online ‘walking tour’ of the mission.

The Walking Tour includes lots of historical information and plenty of devotional materials you might like to use if your visit has a spiritual dimension to it.

Flagler Memorial Church
Moving into the modern era, in fact to the modern expansion and development of the town under Henry Flagler and a few other enterprising gentlemen in the later 19th and early 20th centuries, we see a very different approach to religious observance!

None of the leisured Spanish approach to developing and venerating a shrine over centuries here! No, this is a quintessentially American, “fly by the seat of your pants” approach to building a future religious attraction for St Augustine.

In 1889, Henry Flagler’s daughter, Jenny-Louise, died in childbirth along with her newborn daughter.

Flagler decided that he wanted to commemorate the first anniversary of her death in a brand new church so he had one built!

Yes, the Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church was built in just ONE YEAR! Flagler had workmen working 24 hours a day for the entire year (actually, it only took them 361 days!).

He employed 1,000 men to work 12 hours a day either on day shifts or night shifts for the entire period and he had his one year anniversary memorial service right on time.

Henry Flagler was a man of means you know!

Both of these attractions can be investigated at your leisure and both are at or close to stops on the trolley tours that make all St Augustine’s religious attractions – and all the others – easy to reach.

Just one word of warning: If you plan to drive into St Augustine, prepare to walk a long way from the available parking to all the main attractions. Personally, I always plan to use a trolley service because they all provide free parking if you need it.

Castillo De San Marcos National Monument A Historical Spectacle For Today

Castillo De San Marcos National Monument A Historical Spectacle For Today

The Castillo De San Marcos National Monument – also known as St Augustine Fort – is well worth a visit.

The Castillo De San Marcos National Monument is another great stop on the Red Train Tour (and the other St Augustine trolley tours).

At ‘The Fort’ we were just in time to see one of their many cannons being fired by men in 17th Century Spanish Colonial Uniform from about 1740.

It was a spectacle you shouldn’t miss!

In fact, I liked it so much I am breaking my usual rules and adding a You Tube video of it here.

Just make sure you follow the Sergeant’s orders to cover your ears at the right moment because it is LOUD! (Of course you could just turn the sound down – but where’s the fun in that?)

The Castillo De San Marcos National Monument was built by the Spanish in that era when everybody was fighting over the New World and Pirates regularly attacked Florida’s coast (and the English, the Portuguese and a few others).

Of course the Spanish thought they owned the place and the rest just wanted to own it so there was a pretty good reason to build a fort or two for defense purposes.

But you can probably see from this picture that they didn’t just use anything to build it. The Castillo De San Marcos National Monument – before it was a national monument of course – was built to last using over 500,000 blocks of coquina.

This is strange stuff!

It is a compound of phosphate, sea shells and some other bits and pieces. The main thing about its use in construction is that it is soft.

That doesn’t mean it doesn’t last – it means it absorbs the impact of projectile objects (like cannonballs) rather then breaking and shattering like stone would.

As well as that it is very quick and easy to work with.

When ships came and bombarded the fort they would spend all day at it with no significant effect.

Then, when the firing stopped, the Spanish would run out under cover of darkness and fill in any gaps or holes in the walls (and gather up a few spare cannonballs to fire back the next day!) and be ready for action again in the morning.

Boy, those Spaniards really knew what they were doing!

They spent 23 years building that fort but it has never been taken in battle so it seems to have been worth the time.

The whole feeling of the Castillo De San Marcos National Monument is one of tremendous historical significance combined with the “Wow” factor. You spend all your time there looking at things and saying “WOW! Did you see this?”

The cannon are not only EVERYWHERE they are also great places for photo calls and they have lots of information about the technicals of cannon (which I couldn’t follow because I’m only a girl).

If you are in St Augustine, do make sure you go to the Castillo De San Marcos National Monument – you’ll have a ball especially if you can arrange to catch one of their live demonstrations.

The picture below gives you all the price and opening details from Summer 2007.

Have a great visit!

The Oldest Wooden School House in America

The Oldest Wooden School House in America

The Oldest Wooden School House in America is in St Augustine – Why Not Flydrive Back To Tom Brown’s Schooldays?

The oldest wooden school house in America is sitting right in St George Street, St Augustine waiting for class to get back in session for you. The bell is ringing and it’s definitely time you got back into your shorts and cap and went and learned something!

It was in the Oldest Wooden School House that we talked about how nice it would have been to have had kids with us so that we could have tortured them with stories about “when I was at school……”.

Actually, not many horror stories would have been necessary since most of the things I still have nightmares about were displayed for the kiddiwinks to see for themselves.

A boy sits in a corner wearing the pointy “Dunce Cap”. Wooden paddles of all shapes and sizes decorate the walls. Incomprehensible algebra books lie open on desks. If they had had a school cane hanging up somewhere I think I might have passed out!

Now before you say anything – yes, I know I am showing my age here. But frankly, I don’t much care. This place had me more scared than the Ghost Walk in the evening!

But this is the joy of a Florida Flydrive. You can go somewhere, see something and if it terrifies you, you can drive away!

Outside of the main old school house building is a small compound with a few outbuildings. The kitchen is as absolutely original as the Oldest Wooden School House itself.

It even has traces of the original whitewash on the outside boards. They don’t make whitewash like they used to you know!

The compound behind the old school house itself is full of lush vegetation – tropical stuff like banana palms that give outstanding shade and keep the whole area cool and shady even in the hottest summer weather.

If you are a bit squeamish of wildlife though, you might not want to sit out here too long as there seem to be an unusually large number of small but fat-looking lizards enjoying the cool as well as you.

The Oldest Wooden School House is a small but interesting attraction.

Adults will have fun just remembering the “good old days”;

Engineers will have apoplexy inspecting the heavy iron chains that hold the whole structure down in high winds;
Kids will love ringing the school bell and laughing at how primitive schools used to be – not to mention taking photos of themselves sitting in the outhouse!

Something for everyone there then!

Adults $3.00;
Over 55 yrs $2.50
Ages 6 – 12 $2.00;
